Organised by transgender activist Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi, auditions for the contest took place in over 12 cities. And the final saw 18 women strut their stuff on the catwalk in a bid to walk away with the top prize. The contest was organised in a bid to dispel social taboos associated with being a transgendered person in India, where they are referred to as Hirajas (eunuchs). In the end the contest was won by Bobby from Manipur. As well as receiving prize money she will be trained to help the community in human rights and HIV prevention. Hijras in India often live on the fringes of society, finding it difficult to get a job and facing prejudice and blatant discrimination in every area of life.
